Best agm battery charger
There are a couple of things for you to keep in mind when maintaining your Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery, including a Vudu battery.
Many newer battery chargers, like the Vudu Chargers Digital 1200 12V Performance AGM Charger and Maintainer, have microprocessors. These microprocessors collect the information from the battery to adjust the current and voltage according to need. Some also have different settings for charging flooded, gel, or AGM batteries.
Lead-acid batteries can experience something known as sulfation; this is the formation of lead sulfate crystals upon discharge. You want a charger with a desulfation mode to help condition your battery and keep it performing at its best.
A low amp charger is generally the best choice for charging any lead-acid battery (one to 12 amps). It’s quicker to load at a higher amperage, but it also can generate a lot of heat, which reduces the life of a cell.
Alternators are NOT chargers. Do not rely on your alternator to do the work of a charger. If your battery has been discharged to the point and cannot start your vehicle, charge it as soon as possible, and be sure that your battery gets a full charge.
An alternator does not charge your battery; it is meant to maintain the battery.
Batteries are a consumable product, and will eventually die; no battery is going to last forever. Your goal is to consistently maintain the battery so that you receive the most life out of it.
Different chargers have different capabilities. Under normal circumstances, most 12-volt automatic battery chargers will also work for an AGM battery. Many of the newer battery chargers have settings specifically for AGM batteries; some even have separate settings.
AGM and gel technology are different. Remember that there are different technologies between an AGM battery and a gel battery, which has its own charging requirements. If your charger offers different modes, choose the correct one that applies to your battery. Using the gel setting to charge an AGM battery, not only could it damage your AGM battery over time, but it won’t fully charge.
Under normal starting conditions, a Vudu battery should never experience an at rest voltage below 12. Most 12-volt chargers and alternators have no problem recharging a Vudu battery if it has an at rest voltage of 10.5 or higher.
The magic threshold – 10.5 volts. The charging scenario for a deeply discharged AGM battery, one that’s dipped below 10.5 volts, may be slightly different. The Vudu Digital 1200 can recover batteries that have been discharged as low as 1.25 volts.
