AGM Batteries | Over recent years across the market space, Lithium-ion batteries have gained more traction. To those that are unknowing, it can be easy to dismiss the Lithium-ion battery as an expensive alternative to VRLA, if looking at the amp-hour (Ah) rating. Though, Digging deeper, it becomes clear that there is much more than an Ah rating to consider when you want to choose the best battery or batteries for your specific application.
In the marine world ( where I have the most experience) the choice these days and especially with higher loads – often comes down to Lithium-ion vs. AGM. Gel batteries do have a lower sufficient capacity at a higher discharge current. They also cost about the same as AGMs, assuming both types are monoblocs, as opposed to 2 V long life gel cells.
In order to get 3.8 kWh of useable energy from an AGM battery, the battery would need to be twice that size because of the 50% DOD economy rule. For example, 3.8 x 2 = 7.6 kWh at 24V, meaning 7,600/24, giving a battery rating of 316.66 Ah. This moves closer to twice the rated capacity of the Lithium-ion 24 V 180 Ah. Note the aging of the batteries is not being taken into account as well as temperature derating, or the effect of a higher load. It is reasonable to say, based on these factors, that an AGM battery needs to be twice the Ah rating of a Lithium battery.
